Calculate the internal volume
Use internal dimensions rather than the outside of thick boards or masonry. Subtract permanent internal structures if they occupy meaningful volume.
Choose a suitable growing mix
A practical mix needs drainage, moisture retention and stable organic matter. Match it to crops and local conditions rather than copying a fixed recipe blindly.
Fill and water in stages
Lightly settle material as the bed is filled, then water and recheck the level. Avoid heavy compaction that removes useful pore space.
Practical checklist
- Keep finished soil clear of bed overflow routes.
- Plan delivery access before ordering bulk material.
