About Babushka Market

Practical answers to “how much do I need?”

Babushka Market is an independent website of free planning calculators for everyday jobs: cooking and baking, home and DIY projects, gardens, crafts, parties and household shopping. It currently has 46 calculators and 54 short practical guides.

What the calculators do

Each calculator turns your own measurements into a quantity you can buy: litres of paint, bags of soil, packs of flooring, skeins of yarn. Every calculator page shows the formula it uses, the assumptions behind any default values, a worked example produced by the same calculation, and the limits of the estimate. The methodology page explains the rules that apply to all of them.

What they are not

Results are planning estimates. They are not structural, electrical, food-safety, veterinary or financial advice. Product labels, manufacturer instructions and local regulations take precedence over any figure on this site.

Languages

The site is written in English. French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Italian and Dutch versions of the calculators were drafted with machine translation and then corrected for measurement terms and known errors; they have not all been checked by a native speaker. Please report anything that reads wrongly.

How the site is funded

The calculators are free and need no account. The site is intended to be funded by Google AdSense advertising (not yet shown while the site awaits approval), and some pages link to products on amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Advertisers and retailers have no say over calculator results or methods.

Your saved results

Recent results and named projects are stored in your own browser on your device. They are not sent to Babushka Market. See the privacy policy for the services the site uses.

Corrections

If a formula, unit or example looks wrong, please use the contact page and include the page address and the values you entered.

What is Babushka Market for?

Babushka Market helps plan quantities and purchases for cooking, home projects, gardens, crafts, parties and shopping. Its calculators show the inputs and assumptions behind a result. They do not inspect your materials or circumstances, so compare the output with product instructions and the measurements you actually have.

Worked planning example

Yes. The moving-box example divides each contents volume by its box capacity and rounds after a 10% allowance: 11 small, 15 medium and eight large boxes. Check the displayed formula and pack rounding, then replace the example measurements and rates with your own inputs.
