Worked example

Ten adults at 180 g and four children at 108 g require 2,232 g of raw potato. A 10% allowance gives 2,455.2 g; buying three 1 kg packs leaves 544.8 g.

Method and assumptions

raw_shopping_g = planned_cooked_g / entered_cooked_yield_fraction, or people * sourced_raw_portion

Portions are editable examples. A meal replacement needs more pieces than a short drinks reception; plan the menu rather than applying one universal hourly rule.

Count each dish separately so you do not buy a full meal portion of every item.

Use portions appropriate to the cut and appetite. Bone, trimming and cooking losses vary; this is not a BBQ-specific plan.

Previous planning examples were 180 g for a side, 250 g for roast or mash, and 350 g as a main ingredient, with child portions at 60%. These are editable examples, not universal portions.

The child example is 65% of the adult portion. Change both portions for a starter or a main meal; carton or batch size must use millilitres.

The child example is 65% of the adult portion. Follow the mix instructions for added liquid and yield; pancake size and appetite vary.

Drink rates are editable planning assumptions, not alcohol recommendations. Include water and non-alcoholic choices.

The retained example uses two adult servings in the first hour and one per later hour, with child volumes at 75%. These are editable event-planning assumptions, not alcohol recommendations.

Events shorter than one hour use that fraction of the first-hour rate. Include water and non-alcoholic choices.

The default is an example, not a weather-proof rule. Storage, heat and duration change melt losses; adjust the allowance.

Every adult and child is counted equally. Calculate each supply separately; include extra courses or replacements in pieces per person.

Table capacity must reflect the real layout and accessible seating. Children count as whole seated people.

Use recipients for the people receiving bags. Calculate each type of filler separately when its pack size differs.

Example with the selected inputs

Change the inputs to match your own task. Whole packages are rounded up after allowances, so purchase quantity and actual requirement can differ. Apply each allowance once.

How much raw potato does the example allow?

The editable side-dish example uses 180 g per adult and 108 g per child. Ten adults and four children require 2,232 g before allowance, or 2,455.2 g with 10%. These are purchasing assumptions, not nutritional requirements; choose portions for the rest of your menu.

How many potatoes are 600 g?

The count depends on the measured weight of a potato from your bag. At an assumed average of 150 g, 600 g is four potatoes; at 100 g, it is six. Weigh a sample and use that average if you need an approximate count rather than a purchasing weight.

What does the pack remainder mean?

Three complete 1 kg packs provide 3,000 g for the worked requirement of 2,455.2 g, leaving 544.8 g of raw potato. That is a purchasing remainder, not a prediction of cooked leftovers. Include an explicit allowance suitable for preparation losses rather than silently changing portion sizes.
