How to Scale a Cake Recipe

Use pan-area ratios to scale batter while keeping depth and baking behaviour in view.

Cooking and baking planning tools

Compare pan areas

For round pans, area changes with the square of the diameter. The converter calculates the new-to-original area ratio so ingredient quantities can be scaled consistently.

Keep batter depth comparable

The ratio works best when the new pan has a similar depth and is filled to a similar level. A deeper or shallower layer changes baking time and structure.

Adjust baking with observation

Temperature may stay similar, but timing often changes. Begin checking earlier when layers are shallower and follow food-safety guidance for the recipe.

Practical checklist

  • Scale weights rather than rounded cup measures where possible.
  • Confirm the pan's usable internal dimensions.
