What does a worked calculation look like?
A 5 × 4 m floor is 20 m²; adding 10% for cuts and breakage gives 22 m². A 60 × 30 cm tile covers 0.18 m², so that is 123 tiles. If the box covers 1.44 m², 16 boxes (23.04 m²) are needed.

Reading the result
- Buy by the box coverage printed by the manufacturer rather than by tile count, because boxes are sold whole.
- Diagonal, herringbone and patterned layouts create more offcuts; raise the allowance above 10% for them.
- Keep a few spare tiles from the same batch for future repairs; colours vary between production runs.
Should I buy by tile count or by box coverage?
Use the manufacturer's box coverage when tiles are sold by the box. A 20 m² floor with 10% allowance needs 22 m²; boxes covering 1.44 m² require 16 boxes, providing 23.04 m². The geometric tile count alone does not tell you how many full boxes to buy.
Is a 10% tile allowance always enough?
No. It is an editable example for cuts and breakage. Diagonal layouts, intricate patterns, awkward edges and the need for future spares can require more. Plan the actual layout and check the supplier's advice; the allowance is not a guarantee against running short.
When do I round up the number of tile boxes?
Apply your chosen cutting and spare allowance to the measured area, then divide by the manufacturer's coverage per box and round up. Rounding each intermediate area can inflate the order. Keep the extra tiles identified separately so that you can judge whether their quantity suits your layout and repair needs.
