Measure each floor section first
Record every relevant dimension in the same unit and separate irregular sections. Small measuring errors multiply across an entire project, so check each figure before adding a waste allowance.
Allow for layout and defects
Straight runs in a simple room generally waste less than diagonal layouts, narrow corridors or rooms with many recesses. The product instructions may recommend a minimum allowance.
Turn the result into a buying quantity
Calculations produce a net requirement, while shops sell fixed packs. Round up only at the final buying step, compare pack coverage, and keep unopened flooring returnable where the retailer permits it.
Practical checklist
- Keep batch numbers consistent across packs.
- Include permanent recesses but exclude fixed units only when flooring will not run beneath them.
