Larger is not automatically cheaper
Compare unit prices before anything else. In the unit-price calculator’s default example, a 750 g pack for 4.65 costs 6.20 per kg while a 500 g pack for 3.00 costs 6.00 per kg: the bigger pack is the more expensive way to buy.
Calculate the real saving
When the bulk pack is cheaper per unit, multiply the difference by the quantity you will genuinely use. A large percentage on a low-cost item can still be a small cash saving.
Account for waste
Perishable products, changing preferences and damaged storage can erase a bulk discount. Estimate the usable quantity rather than the pack quantity.
Consider cash and space
Buying more ties up money and storage. Bulk buying works best when demand is predictable and storage suitable.
Practical checklist
- Check best-before and use-by dates.
- Do not bulk-buy an untested product for the discount alone.
- Recheck unit prices when promotions change.
