How Much Rice Per Person?

Dry rice per person for a side or a main, how appetite changes it, and what cooked yield to expect, with the calculator’s working figures.

Cooking and baking planning tools

Plan in dry grams

Buying and cooking instructions both use dry weight. The calculator uses 60 g of dry rice per person for a side and 75 g for a main, then applies 0.8× for light and 1.25× for hungry appetites.

Worked example

Six people with average appetites need 360 g of dry rice as a side, or 450 g as a main. The calculator estimates cooked weight at 2.7× dry weight, about 972 g for the side portion; the real figure depends on the variety and method.

Match the role of rice

Rice as the base of a meal needs more than rice as one of several sides. When the menu has other starches, the side portion can be reduced.

Cooking capacity and leftovers

Rice expands, so check pan capacity; very large quantities cook more reliably in batches. Cool leftovers quickly and follow food-safety guidance for storing and reheating rice.

Practical checklist

  • Follow the water ratio on the pack for that variety.
  • Rinse only if the recipe or pack recommends it.
  • Cook in batches for large events.

How much dry rice does the example use per person?

The side-dish example uses 60 g of dry rice per person at average appetite: six people need 360 g. The main-dish assumption is 75 g. These are planning inputs, not dietary requirements; the rest of the menu and your guests' appetites affect the amount you need.

Is the cooked weight exact?

No. The calculator multiplies dry weight by 2.7 to illustrate a possible cooked yield. Six side-dish portions therefore show 972 g cooked from 360 g dry. Rice variety, rinsing and the cooking method affect water uptake, so weigh the dry rice for purchasing.

How does appetite change the result?

The small-appetite option multiplies the base portion by 0.8 and the large-appetite option by 1.25. Those factors are explicitly stated estimates. Change the meal type first, then adjust for appetite, rather than adding imaginary people to obtain a larger portion.
